German raid sailors narrow escape

An article from the Scarborough Pictorial 23rd December 1914 entitled "SAILORS NARROW ESCAPE" which describes a sailors return home from a serious accident only to face the German bombardment of Scarborough - only narrowing avoiding death.

Mr George Scales, son of Mrs Scales, 69, Victoria Road, a sailor in the merchant service, is at present on a visit home, where he is recuperating after an accident which befell him a few weeks ago in Montreal. He fell 40 feet down the hold, fortunately he is well on the way to complete recovery.

During the bombardment he had a narrow escape, a small piece of shell hitting his coat sleeve as he was going downstairs. It grazed the arm, pierced the clothing and passed out leaving him unhurt.

The residence was however, badly damaged. The roof went completely, two top rooms were simply demolished, and the windows shattered from top to bottom. Only the shop was intact. The chimneys were choked with debris, and for some time there could not be a fire in the house.
