Fishing cobble founders off Scarborough

The following news story was provided by Marie Williams from Grimsby. It refers to William Jennison who was her Great Great Grandfather.

The following news story appeared in the Glasgow Herald Newspaper 16/11/1895:- "A Scarborough correspondent telegraphs that during the strong gale which set in there the crew of one of it's fishing cobbles belonging to George Sheader foundered off the castle. Two of the crew, the brothers Sheader, were rescued by the steam trawler Flying Sylph, The other one, William Jennison, was drowned."

The following story appeared in the Northern Echo 16/11/1895:- "The Severe Gale. Sad loss of life. During the gale at Scarborough on Friday a fishing coble (Mary & Alice) was overturned by the tremendous sea, and the crew of three men were left struggling in the water. The steam trawler rescued two of the men, but the third William Jennison, was too exhausted to reach the lifebuoy which was thrown to him, and sank. Jennison was a married man, and leaves a large family".
