Scarborough raid - damage in Falsgrave

"MAINLY ABOUT THE DISTRICT OF FALSGRAVE" in the Scarborough Mercury 24th December. A description of the German bombardment of Scarborough in 1914

To say that much commotion was created in the Falsgrave district but mildly expresses the situation. People flocked from their houses in their hundreds and distressing scenes were witnessed, no one knowing whether the houses would come toppling about tier ears the next minute.

The plight of the women and children was pitiable, little ones huddling against their mothers, who, with what belongings it was possible to gather hastily together, and clasping babes to their breasts, made for the nearest road which would lead them farthest away from this unparalleled visitation.

The roads to Ayton, Forge Valley, and Scalby were thronged with scurrying crowds.

And as people flocked through the streets debris was falling in all directions.
