The Gladstone Road School log book states that on the 16th December, 1914
"German raid on Scarborough. Fortunately it occurred before school. It commenced at eight and lasted about 40 minutes. The school hall was badly damaged. A five inch cap of a shell was inside the hall clock which had stopped at 8-25 a.m. and one cannot feel too thankful that the children had not assembled.
A classroom adjoining the hall was badly damaged. Two children were in the hall when the bombardment commenced but the caretaker took them down to the cellar and they were safe."
The school log states on 15th January,1915
"Practised all the school in drill in case of another bombardment or air-raid."
Former teacher John Evans remembers when in the 1950's he was teaching in what today is the dining room, the ceiling collapsed on his desk, revealing a large piece of shrapnel which had been there for almost 40 years.
