An article entitled "SOUND OF THE GUNS AT BRIDLINGTON" from the 18th December, 1914, edition of the Scarborough Mercury. This describes how the German bombardment of Scarborough was heard in Bridlington and even caused some windows to break.
The sound of the guns in Scarborough Bay was heard distinctly at Bridlington. It began at a minute or two to eight and continued until 8-30. The bombing was regular, and it was assumed that an engagement was taking place in the vicinity of Filey. Numbers of people were alarmed by the vibration of the guns rattling the windows, and in one or two instances, it was said panes of glass had been broken.
The morning opened clear and fine, but when the firing began there was a haze on the horizon.
Numbers of people walked down to the pier head and the sea front.
It was some hours before news came through of the terrible devastation wrought at Scarborough; and the sympathy of the people was expressed everywhere.
