HMS Hood and HMS Repulse visit Scarborough in 1926

In September 1936 HMS Hood and HMS Repulse visited Scarborough. Hood was the world's largest battle cruiser at the time. Over 3 days officials and visitors were welcomed onboard and special events were put on in the town for the crews.

Crew members were allowed free entry, in uniform, to the Scarborough cricket ground and a 'meat tea' was served for them in the Grand Hotel, Olympic Cafe, Arcadian Restaurant and Princess Hall restaurant. A football match was held in the athletic ground on Seamer Road and a Dance Ball held in the Grand Hotel. Half price tickets were available to crew members in uniform at the Futurist Theatre, Londesborough Picture House, Aberdeen Picture House, Grand Picture House and Astley's Royal Circus. Gala Land entry was free. A confetti and fireworks display was held on the Marine Drive along with a military band in Peasholm Park.
